The Power of Play
OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)
At our school, we are proud to be developing the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) Programme. OPAL is an award-winning school improvement programme that helps schools create high-quality play opportunities for all children. It is based on a simple but powerful belief: children learn important life skills through play. (Outdoor Play and Learning)
Children spend around 20% of their primary school life at playtime – the equivalent of more than one full year of school. OPAL helps us make this valuable time as enriching, active and enjoyable as possible. (Outdoor Play and Learning)
What will OPAL look like?
Through the OPAL programme, children will have access to a wider range of play experiences. They may choose to:
- Build, create and invent using loose parts and recycled materials
- Explore imaginative and role-play activities
- Develop physical skills through climbing, balancing, running and active play
- Play cooperatively with children from different year groups
- Enjoy nature, outdoor exploration and creative games
- Take managed risks and learn how to assess challenges safely
Children are given greater choice about how, where and with whom they play, helping them become more independent, resilient and confident. (Outdoor Play and Learning)
Why is play so important?
Research shows that high-quality play supports children’s:
- Physical health and fitness
- Social and communication skills
- Emotional wellbeing and happiness
- Creativity and imagination
- Problem-solving and resilience
- Ability to manage risk and make decisions
Play provides opportunities for children to practise skills that cannot always be taught in the classroom and helps them develop into confident, capable learners. (Outdoor Play and Learning)
Is OPAL safe?
Yes. Children’s safety remains our highest priority. OPAL promotes a balanced approach to risk, recognising that children learn valuable skills when they experience challenge in a managed and supervised environment. Staff receive specialist training, and activities are carefully planned and monitored.
How can parents help?
Families can support OPAL by:
- Donating suitable loose parts and play materials when requested
- Ensuring children come to school with appropriate outdoor clothing
- Encouraging outdoor play and exploration at home
- Talking positively with children about their play experiences
We value the support of our families as we develop exciting play opportunities for all children.
Our Vision
We want every child to enjoy playtimes that are active, creative, inclusive and fun. Through OPAL, we aim to create a school environment where children are happy, engaged and inspired every day, developing the skills they need for life through the power of play.
